Medium
Medium is a research and design collective based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Medium is interested in the convergence of politics, society and built form, and the ways in which they interact.
Medium is formed of four architects who have collaborated since their studies in Political Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (KADK) in Copenhagen. Their past works include research and design projects in Tbilisi, Georgia, as well the curation of Another Architecture – an exhibition and symposium held in Tbilisi. Medium designed and built installations in Seoul as part of the International Union of Architects World Congress, and have worked individually on projects in Cuba, Japan, Denmark and the United Kingdom. Their publications include Political Architecture: Tbilisi 2017.
Medium’s upcoming work includes a contribution to the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial in October 2018.
Medium is Camille Filbien, Benjamin Wells, Francis Naydler and Jacob Sturdy.
8-23-VI
Medium’s contribution to the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial takes the form of a permanent installation in the 8th microdistrict of Gldani, extending from entrance VI of block 23. 8-23-VI establishes a dialogue between the semi-private circulation space of the housing block and the surrounding public space, by extending and activating the threshold between them. The pavilion’s continuous surface of shutters mediates the relationship between these two realms, redefining it as ambiguous and ever-changing. These shutters allow the space to become enclosed and defined – as an extension of the apartment’s domestic territory, or open and porous – as part of the wider public realm. By inviting transformation and interaction, the pavilion echoes the strategies of appropriation manifested in Gldani’s many garages and extensions, but redefines them as a collective practice. The pavilion sets the stage for a multiplicity of activities, from everyday encounters between neighbours to organised assemblies where shared concerns can be discussed and acted upon.
