Michael Gentile

Michael Gentile is professor of human geography at the University of Oslo and associate editor of Eurasian Geography and Economics. He is known for his work on various urban issues related to Central and Eastern Europe, including housing, socio-spatial differentiation, and urban geopolitics. His regional focus has recently been on Ukraine. In his recent essay “Three Metals and the ‘PostSocialist City’: Reclaiming the Peripheries of Urban Knowledge”, Gentile argues that the careless use of the label “post-socialist city” is theoretically disempowering and acts as a powerful barrier to the inclusion of cities in Central and Eastern Europe into broader debates taking place within urban studies.
