The studio “Jorge Mario Jáuregui Architects” is based in Rio de Janeiro and works on projects of public interest, which are formal and informal as well. They are most famous for their work addressing Rios favelas, as their upgrading strategies are based on the existing structures and focus the social and economic needs of its inhabitants. Their alternative strategies include an interdisciplinary approach, featuring technical, legal, cultural and social aspects, to ensure a site-specific planning that respects geographical as well as social conditions. The office has therefore contributed to a paradigmatic change of earlier practices of demolition and displacement in so called “slum upgrading” projects.
